Re: spuria

Hello Debi,

No. Dutch iris are bulbous. Spurias grow from rhizomes, not bulbs. The
bloom form is similar to the Dutch iris, but the colors available are
considerably more dramatic. The nicest iris clump I've ever seen bloom, of
any variety, was a spuria clump of CHOCOLATE FUDGE in Pat Norvell's yard in
Dallas. A sight not soon forgotten. The memory is enough to keep me
exercising a lot of patience in allowing them to create clumps that might
get even half as good. Their foliage is tall and attractive in their growth
period in the spring, but they tend to go dormant for me in our hot dry
Texas summers. They have proved to be durable in coming back every year,
but have been slow to make big clumps. Bill Shear can probably tell you
more about successfully growing them and providing them with what they need
to last and perform well. My biggest problem so far is their tendency to
bloom late when the weather is very hot, so the blooms have not stood up
well in the heat and the bugs have attacked the blooms, as they do with all
the late blooming iris. Hopefully, at some point, they will make the
desirable clumps I want and have a good year to bloom. The wait will have
been well worth it if they do.
