CULT: New Irisarians and the Duties of a Gardener (formerly Re:Digest 1935)

    I agree with Mark.  Don't be afraid to ask questions.  We as gardeners owe a duty to anyone wanting to join the field.  That duty is to encourage and to nurture newbies.

As for answers to your questions.  What do you mean by the term momma's bulbs?  If you are talking about hand me downs from family this is a great way to gain new iris to your collection.  Most of the times these "hand me downs" are heirloom meaning that they were either introduced or hybridized 30+ years ago. (these are the rules in the iris field....most heirlooms other than iris must be 50+ years old)  I would go to www.google.com and put in Historic Iris Preservation Society for more information on heirloom iris.  You can find info on how to I.D. plants, sources, membership, and visiting gardens with heirloom iris.
