I really got a laugh out of the description of Hello Darkness.   Would that it could do that for me.   I have had the same small, non increasing one for three years.   It doesn't change, bloom, increase, or die.   I'm going to move it in the morning to a new location
where maybe it will do one of the above.   At this point, I don't much care which.

  The first year it didn't bloom and by year two it was a fairly nice  
clump with eight to ten fans, all of which bloomed but one immature  
fan.  The next year it rested and built up another substantial clump,  
then bloomed down to one.  It seems to alternate yearly and is in a  
rebuilding year as I write.
