Thanks for site info. The photos of stuffed and mounted squirels were
interesting. The Canadian site is Essex, On, South West Ontario.
Their white squirels are not albino, but a white color with black
eyes, no pink eyed (albino). In the original magazine (nature
Magazine) article they mention Black sqirels as being indigenous to
Southern Ontario. They (black)are very common throughout Southern
Ontario. I would suspect that other black squirel locations have
imported them, as suggested on the web site. I understand that there
are several loctions of albino squirels, but the white with black
eyes are quite rare.
As an aside, Wiarton Ontario has a groundhog day celebration each
year with "Wiraton Willy", an albino groundhog. There have been
several different Willys and usually an understudy is ready, just in
case. Several years ago they didn't have an understudy ready and used
a stuffed and mounted Willy, which was discovered and caused a bit of
a scandel. Unfortunatly Willy had died over winter and it wasn't
discovered until just before Feb 2nd. They do have a replacement in
place now, a live albino groundhog.
