Well, all the blooms on two stalks of Louisa's Song (one really nice one,
one "I thought that rhizome was dead") have been opening; four more flowers
yesterday and no real good "mates' to choose from. I went with a unique
light blue (Cloud Ballet) the first time; ruffled dark Purple (Larry
Gaulter) twice; a blue bitone (Best Bet) once; and finally gave up and went
with Reincarnation on the last three blooms. What the heck, the space-age
and reblooming gene pools could both use an infusion of great form.
Reincarnation is a weird light boysenberry-mauve blended thing with good
growth, some rebloom, excellent branching and bud count, and prominent horns
or flounces. Louisa's Song is a recent Blyth lavender/purple bitone (not
his usual striking contrast) with great ruffled form and substance, tall
broad flowers, stalks, and foliage.
Lots of nice iris blooming, but just nothing with the right "synergy" for
LS. Maybe something better will open soon.
My favorite seedling, a dark-topped purple-on-white plicata with a wide band
on the falls and brick red-brown beards (not the more usual bright orange)
has had an excellent stalk open for a few days. This may be my first intro
someday if the plant habits are satisfactory. It bloomed for the first time
last year in a very stressed location; I abused it with a January
transplant, and it is just starting to recover.
