I know this has been said lots of times before, but I am so glad you
folks gave me so much encouragement to start making crosses. Nothing
beats the suspense of waiting for your very own children to bloom.
I've been sitting in the dirt next to open seedling blooms, taking notes
as if I were applying for registration (to get in the habit of looking
closely at the things KK wants on the form), even on the ones that will
never leave my garden.
And hovering every hour or so over a nice seedling clump with nice tall
stalks with lots of fat, near black, ruffled buds that I haven't seen
bloom before (DUSKY CHALLENGER X the lacy lavender seedling in
Schreiners' seedling test panel a few years back - it put up 4
bloomstalks on the first year rhizome, bloomed out, & rotted, but not
before I got its pollen). Its sibs bloomed last year & some were nice,
but definitely not introduction caliber. This one probably won't be
either, but the suspense is wonderful.
I highly recommend the experience to anybody who has (or can borrow)
room.
Lots of rain & cool temps have brought out incredible color saturation
in everything. RAGING TIGER has true-red falls, & deep purples glow.

taking yet another break from working on getting labels straight
(constant struggle from one year to the next - I think they get up and
walk around at night, playing musical chairs....)
