Nick, you may have already tried this:
Take 2 garden forks. Drive one into the centre of the clump, using your foot
to push it in. place the second fork back to back with the first and drive
it through the clum, as close as possible to the first fork. Pull the
handles of the forks in opposite directions until the clump divides. I use
this with the most reluctant of perennials. You may find that you pierce
some of the rhizomes. Wrap them in heavy plastic and discard in the bin. If
you don't wrap them, then this time next year, your local rubbish dump will
be covered in lush growth :-)
