Hello,
I'm very sorry to hear about all the bloom seasons cut short by the
cold snap.
I had been bemoaning the colder than normal we'd been having since
Feb. However, because of this weather, our season is not very far
along (TBs just starting to grow), so the current freeze doesn't
affect us too much.
However, although it's a tad too early to make a final judgement, I
believe I lost about 10-15% of my newly planted rhizomes over the
winter. We had really mild weather the first half of winter followed
by brutal weather with night after night in the single digits.
In March, we got down to 4 F one night - the coldest March temp
recorded in Boston since 1957.
I'd mulched more this winter because I'd had similar rhizome loss
(main fans dying followed by the whole rhizome rotting) last year.
So my question is: Do you typically mulch over winter and if so, what
do you use?
