So as we all go through our gardens and survey the recent freeze damage I got to thinking. It might be useful to the general gardener and breeders to know what varieties have potential for tolerance to frost and freezing. Obviously this round of freezing applies only to the early bloomers and rebloomers.
I would be willing to keep a list of such observations assuming someone else isn't already doing so or wants me to take it over (haha).
Going thruogh my garden I observed stalk and bud in sheath damage. Most of the stalk damage generally occured on plants whose stalk tissue had emerged from the sheath. some had absolutely no stalk damge and even less had any bud damage. What I think would be beneficial is to know what varieties have very little or no stalk damage and just how cold it got outside.
So all it would involve is going out the the garden and observing what varieties survived and will bloom fairly normally and the actual overnight temp for how many days.
We dedicated growers are already going out to the garden to observe the damage. It might simply a matter of writing down the details.
Might it also be worthwhile to note which ones did not make it? Too much work? Feedback please????
Here is my list as an example
Lowest overnight temp: 27 F
Number of days below freezing: 4
Undamaged stalks:
Rosalie Figge
Rose Princess
Doubleday
2 Halston seedlings
4 Good Show seedlings
Damaged:
