Little proof in the iris world.  One could assume that anything that  doesn't 
bloom, didn't try to bloom?  However, if one tracks fall stalks  that don't 
have time to mature?  And observes the way they behave?   The withered stalk 
hypothesis is a reasonable one!  
 
I predict Schreiner's irises will fare well here.  
 
For the record, most potted irises seem to be in good shape.
