CULT:freeze-stalk report

While driving down the road yesterday, I spotted some iris in bloom. Really
ratty freeze damaged blooms but they WERE blooms! When we arrived home, my
granddaughter and I spotted one lone bloom at the back side of my garden.

Freeze was April 5-10th. Accelerated season had bloom stalks showing color
on the very earliest seedlings. Three different seedlings (TB) opened in the
house as their siblings froze outside.

We walked through the entire garden but only saw stalks in one section-the
older seedlings planted in 2004. We counted less than 12 stalks and four or
five were all on one seedling. The one bloom that was open looked terrible.
It wouldn't have been great in the best of circumstances, but freeze damage
was obvious. No guarantee the blooms will have pollen, the prized product
here!

A closer evaluation this morning revealed a few more stalks and information
that is VERY important to evaluation of those seedlings I saw yesterday! I
found stalks on Breaking News, Cloud Berry & Angel Among Us. They all bloom
late here. Amity Estate has a stalk but hasn't bloomed in my garden. It's
listed as medium.

A couple of the seedlings bloom medium to late. What I'm seeing are the
late stalks that would have emerged near the end of the season. Good to have
cultivars that send up stalks over a period of time! I hope to see a few more
stalks through the next week or so.

I'm not seeing much rhizome damage (yet).
