This is my first iris bloom season in this location.
The area is still in an extreme drought condition,
though it does not seem to have had a noticeably
adverse effect on the irises (which have received no
supplementary irrigation since the beginning of this
year). We also dodged the frost bullet several times.
The Median bloom has been very good for first year
plants; 3/5ths of the Medians I planted have bloomed
so far and there are more to come. On the whole, the
Median bloom has been about as good as could be
expected on first year divisions.
The first TBs (EPICENTER and PURE AND SIMPLE) bloomed
on April 11. Both are still in bloom and have unopened
buds. To date I have 14 TB's in bloom (about 1/7th of
the total number of cultivars planted), and probably
no more than half will bloom this spring. Stalk
heights and blossom size have been about average, but
branching and bud count are subpar on most cultivars,
though EPICENTER had 9 buds on a terminal and two
branches (triple sockets on each), and there are
currently show stalks in bloom on GAME PLAN, which
sports a terminal, two branches, and two spurs (8 buds
total) and TOM JOHNSON, which has a terminal, two
branches, and a spur (7 buds total).
I judged at a show in Georgia this past weekend where
the TB's in particular were adversely affected by
weather and leaf spot conditions.
