In Italy the major source of Orris root is Iris
pallida. Florentina is what to see as the source in a
lot of herbals but in commerce it is actually I.
pallida. I have often wondered if the sickening sweet
smell of rotting Rhizomes is the same only more
concentrated scent of Orris. The scent is described as
the scent of violets. It seems ironic that the scent
of violets comes from Iris but then in perfume the
scent of roses comes from pelargoniums (geraniums).
