Linda, There's an old trick I've used with great success when irises (or any plants) need to be transplanted too late in the season to avoid freeze damage and gives me up to an extra month of warmer conditions for transplanting... I use branches that have come down during our late storms over those plants, forming an open network structure with gaps usually no more than 5". It's not a mulch, so doesn't trap moisture but it does seem to moderate the temperature enough so plants have a good chance of survival. Branches are left on over the winter (the snow can form an igloo) and taken off when the weather starts to warm in the spring. Christy ----- Original Message ----- From: Linda Mann Have you experimented to see if there is anything that can be done to minimize transplant effect? Other than making sure the roots aren't damaged & planting right away - neither of which would help me with storeboughts.... --------------------------------------------------------------------- To sign-off this list, send email to majordomo@hort.net with the message text UNSUBSCRIBE IRIS
