I see it fairly often here, on ship-ins and my own seedlings. Just today, I went through the ones planted last spring and noted the ones with, as I call it 'spent primary' fans. Since Valentine's Day and Avona are both warm weather rebloomers, stands to reason they had stalks starting down in the rhizome that were too far along to put 'on hold' until spring. I think some iris are better at putting stalks on hold than others. I'd guess that ability is partly responsible for Renown blooming so early in spring. A fair number of seedlings that have spent primary fans the spring after they were planted out go on to rebloom here. I planted Walter Moores' Purple Reprise late last summer and the primary fan promptly died, (presumably from incipient stalk), but three nice increases came on right away. Stalk coming on the biggest now. Ironic when you have to wait to see rebloomers bloom. Sorry I have no practical help to offer. Mary Lou, near Indianapolis, Z5 - running about 2 weeks early. Terrified this will be a repeat of the freeze disaster of 2007. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To sign-off this list, send email to majordomo@hort.net with the message text UNSUBSCRIBE IRIS
