someone posted a note quite a while back about diatomaceous earth and the
human health risks from inhaling it (shreds the lungs up just like it shreds
slugs).

and diatomaceous earth comes from diatoms (not coral) which are single celled
little algae (I think) with beautifully ornamented silica 'shells'.  the
glass bumps and spines are what shred things.  the earth comes from ancient
deposits of their little corpses.
