shows and exhibitions

Its such fun to put on my muddy boots and jump on a nerve.

In reply to all those amazed that after being in existence for more than 3
yrs, we haven't done a judged show - a lot of the comments about why NOT to
do a show apply to us. Some of the more experienced members in our club have
seen the bad things that can happen, but mostly we just don't seem to have
any interest in competing with each other. Every year we talk about it and
every year we decide that we might enjoy doing a judged show at some
unspecified time in the future. And that we will certainly do one if we have
more than an occasional seedling. We are VERY interested in garden judging
and are planning to use some of our summer rhizome sale income to send
members to judge's training sessions. Also, some of us are not much
interested in what a judge might say about an iris stalk unless it is still
attached to the plant in a garden. (stomp stomp : )) heresy!

We really enjoy our exhibition show - we try to bring in as many different
varieties as we can of all types of iris, including pallida and any other
species; try to have rhizomes and plants for sale, even though it's the
'wrong' time of year; bring in lots of catalogs, bulletins, directions for
growing, etc etc. Last year, there were some questions about seedlings -
total lack of awareness of flower breeding (like, seeds???). If I have any
blooms at all this year, I plan to take in some parents and children as a
demonstration. We advertise the show everywhere we can think of within about
a 50 mile radius and have had a tremendous public turnout. Last year, we
signed up something like 20 new club members.
