more about clubs, shows, exhibits

A few more thoughts on the subject - we advertise all of our club meetings in
all the regional newspapers, including the program for the meeting. All
meetings are open to the public and we usually have a few new people come to
each meeting - we meet in the general meeting room of a big chain buffet all
you can eat restaurant. One of our guest speakers this spring has a
commercial native plant nursery - we had a big turnout for that one. He had
to promise to show at least one slide of an iris (he talked about iris quite
a bit considering only cristata is a common native here), but other than
that, was free to talk about whatever he wanted. We also have a drawing or
mini-auction of a club purchase every year. One of the members suggested an
auction at the our unjudged show, but we decided not to do that this year.

We are also trying to help set up a 'mini-symposium' sponsored by all the
local garden society chapters with each inviting a paid expert speaker (one
who can pronounce latin with the syllables in the right order and who doesn't
talk with an east tennessee accent i guess). It is still in the planning
stages so I am not sure when or how it will work out. So far, I think the
main interest is from the local daylily society, us, and maybe the rose
society?

We also donate some of the proceeds from our rhizome sale to new clubs and
our region and hope to host one of the Region 7 fall meetings fairly soon.

So, don't worry about us not being 'out there' just because we keep choosing
not to have a judged show.
