Actually, one of the reasons for the AIS awards system existing at
all is to promote irises that perform well in *many different* regions.
There is generally little problem identifying irises that do well
in your own area. The AIS awards (hopefully) let people know what
will perform respectably anywhere in the US.
I don't think TB irises have developed into different "races" (like
dormant and evergreen daylilies) that are suited to particular
regions. There are many TBs that do equally well in different locales.
We should work to reduce the number of exceptions to that rule.
And, of course, some of the different classes of iris have different
requirements (arils prefer dry summers, LAs and JIs prefer acid soil
and lots of water, etc.), but there are already separate awards for
the different classes, so that more or less takes care of itself.
