Tom Tadfor Little: Yer right that the AIS has awards which indicate the
cultivars that are supposedly good growers for ALL REGIONS, but I interpeted
the question that the writer wished for some way to recognize the iris with
specific cultivation needs and preferences, thus I suggested some awards
for specifically saught-after traits that a given hybridizer had particularly
good results with and that award(s) would indicate to purchasers that
the "winners" would grow in specified conditions. Some folks will go far and
wide to purchase and plant the Dykes winners. And they are not good livers
for many parts of the country. Beverly Sills for example is very controversial.
So, Dykes is not an indication that those award winners grow well all over. It
does mean that lots of people voted for it. That's all.
