Re: Rot and borer resistant iris: a myth

Nell: I wonder if many iris growers are moving twoard the beardless because
the bearded are just too fussy for some folks. Someone else needs to look
at the membership numbers for Society for Japanese Irises to see. But John
Coble and Bob Bauer, (John is editor of THE REVIEW, SJI's newsletter) stopped
growing bearded and are almost exclusively growing beardless at Ensata Gardens.
When WEENIES traveled to Michigan a couple of years ago, we seemed to hear
this over and over again.. Not that beardless are immune to borer, but are more resistant, it seems, and will tolerate a wider range of conditions than
bearded iris.
Anyone have that experience? Beardless extend the season, but take more
kindly to less attention than bearded iris. And as we become more educated
and the beardless cultivars get more and more exciting, tastes may have changed.
It's really nice to see the falls of a wide japanese fluttering in the breeze..
Right after the bearded have put o their show...
