re: spring bloom and freezes

gunnar and others - it has been a slow spring here - things are either a week
or a month late or killed outright. my low lying frost pocket is worse off
than some of the more sunny hillsides around.

as for varieties trying to bloom - BLITZ, a bright yellow SDB, tough as nails
and always reliable in spite of late freezes doesn't seem to be planning to
bloom at all this year. but much to my joyful surprise, all three of the
early blooming TBs that i started growing in the last few years seem to be
forming bud stalks (the fans feel a little lumpy) - ICE SCULPTURE, LADY
FRIEND, and VANITY. These three were either highly recommened as able to
shake off dreadful cold snaps after already starting spring growth or were
the most common stalks at a middle Tennessee show after a similar spring
series of disastrous freezes.

i agree with carolyn that the TBs bloom more or less at the same time, but
weather wierdness can make them spread out over a longer time. i have had
some varieties surprise me by making very late bloomstalks long after the
earliest ones have finished (well, 4 weeks can seem like a long time)

i would really like to hear names of other varieties that are fairly early
bloomers that endure the abrupt severe early spring freezes. (the kind that
come after a few days in the 70's or 80's).
