I have to think that genetics has something to do with the difference in
vigor between the plants. I don't notice much difference between quality of
stock between the different hybridizers, just that some of the iris are
weanies. What I would like to try is to put maybe two rhizomes of the same
cultivar in different parts of the garden and see if they only look scrawny
because of their location. Maybe I need to talk to them or something, who knows.
Our club buys new introductions, grows them in members gardens and each
meeting we draw numbers and give away 6 or 7 rhizomes to be picked up at the
July picnic. What ever are left after the monthly winners have their iris
are raffled off (cheap) to members at the picnic.
Here is a list of the hybridizers of the 1995 Club iris that I am currently
growing: Niswonger, Keppel, Dunn, Ghio, Maryott, Schreiner, Meek, Innerst,
Kerr, Muilin, Durrance, Burseen, Hoage. Both Joe Ghio and Bill Maryott are
members of our club but the others aren't. Truthfully I have no idea where
some of the hybridizer are from. But Joe and Bill are basically neighbors
and their intros have strong growers and weak growers also. I will have to
take a survey and see if a particular Hybridizer has obviosly stronger stock.
I was asked to try out 'Lady Bird Johnson' by a member of our club a couple
of years ago (last year maybe??) It is just being introduced this year I am
waiting for it to bloom. It grew well for me though. I think that the
hybridizer is C Mahan. Is that the same person as the Mahan on this list?
