Although parentage is not a requirement, it is highly desireable if available
(I am a great offender in this regard but because of necessity. In
registering Japanese iris imports for the Society for Japanese Irises, more
often than not the parentages are not known and there is no way of finding
them out.) One of the reasons American, French, British and Australian iris
breeders have been able to make such remarkable progress, has been good
record keeping and the international registration system maintained by the
AIS.
As several people have pointed out, for an iris to be entered in an AIS
sanctioned show it must be registered unless it is a seedling or a valid
species. (Many species forms are registered, and we are encouraging even
more to be registered in the future by the establishment of the new award for
species forms.). Clarence Mahan, VA
