Hummingbirds

I also share Clarence and Louise's affection for hummingbirds. There is a
"couple" that have been residing in my garden for the past five years. I had
some there before then but the process of remodeling and adding a second story
on my house scared them away for a year.

One "couple" resides in a cedar tree and the other "couple" resides in a large
trellis covered with trumpet vines, normal and red honeysuckle, and jasmine.
Between the two areas is a deck. One year I put up a hummingbird feeder and all
the two makes did was fight over the feeded. I later bought another hummingbird
feeder and relocated them both closer to each nesting area. One fall while
trimming back my trellis I found the nest. It was very small and kinda cute. I
left it but haven't been able to see the birds for the foilage. They are
curious and will frequently "buzz" me and come over and watch what I'm doing in
the yard. Like Clarences's birds, they particularily like the Cardinal flowers
growing in the yard. They also visit the pineapple sage, cleomes, and assorted
vines on the trellis regularly.

Somewhere I read that they were attracted to the colors red and orange. That
would certainly account for their attraction to the above flowers and the red
hummingbird feeders. Beside the trellis I have a clump of RED ECHO, a Louisiana
Iris, growing. I have never seen them visit it yet or any other iris. Maybe
we'll all have gardens full of hummingbirds once hybridizers develop bright red
TBs. <grin>
