Questions

D. Mosser asks the following questions:

>1. Does an iris hybrid have to be registered with AIS to compete or win in a
show?

To win "Queen of Show" the iris has to be a registered variety.

>2. Does one have to know the name of an iris for it to compete in a show?

Not necessarily, many shows offer a "Nameless Beauty" class. This is a
class where ribbons are awarded (not AIS ribbons, but sometimes AIS ribbon with
the AIS logo cut off. I've seen some shows that will ask the judges to look at
the nameless beauties class before judging begins. If any of the entries can be
named then they are placed in right section for competition. At other shows if
the judge is able to identify the iris they will write the name on the entry
tag.

>3. Say I wanted to try my hand at breeding iris, would I have to keepdetailed
>pedigrees on the plants and parents in order to register the new hybrids? (I
know >this is presumptuous to think a novice could breed a Dykes Medal winner.)

If you look thru some of the Registration & Introduction books you will
find that most of the later entries have pedigrees listed. I've seen entries in
many of the earlier R&I books list the pedigrees as being "unknown" or "by bee"
- meaning that they didn't know the parents of the cross, or that it was a
natural cross done by bees!

>4. Is there any information on the Web about getting started in shows or tips
on >beginner iris breeding?

Not that I'm aware of. Cyber-Irises is fairly new concept on the web.
Most of what's online has been done within the last year. There have been some
articles published in the AIS Bulletin concerning both topics.

5. Since I'm not an AIS member yet, can anyone give me some contact names
or information for active local AIS chapters in South Carolina or Georgia?

I'm not that familiar with the clubs in that region. The regional vice
president is Claire Honkanen. She is a very lovely lady and I'm sure that she'd
love to hear from you. Her e-mail address is: claire235@aol.com

Hope this info helps!
