Hi,
My name is Janet Burleigh. I am extremely new to the internet and gardening
as well. Please excuse any mistakes I may make.
Now about myself. I live in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. I hope I am not the
only Southerner in this group. Anyway, my husband and I just recently
purchase our first home, so I have been trying my hand at gardening. I
started off by planting anything I could get my hands on. Finally I
realized that irises will grow in this warm southern climate.
I have some Dutch iris that I planted a couple of years age. They are doing
ok, but I think it is a bit warm for them here. While in Colorado this past
summer I visited Long's Gardens in Boulder. I got several bearded irises
from them. They are growing like weeds. I do not know the names or colors
of hardly any of them, so I can't wait for them to bloom. I had my first
bloom stock appear this morning. I can't see the flower yet, so I still
don't know what color it is. I'm so excited, I can't wait to see what it
will look like.
Just recently I purchased several Louisiana iris from a nursery here in
Baton Rouge. They are doing wonderful. Almost all of them have bloomed
atleast once. I'm not too sure what all I have because I have several that
were left over from last year that did not have tags. I can't wait too see
what all I have. If anyone knows very much about Louisiana iris, I have a
beautiful dark red iris with a yellow center. I would like to know the name
of this flower. I would very much like to purchase some more of these
irises, for they are quite lovely.
Along with my irises, I have several other plants in my yard, including:
roses, pink jasmine, carnations, ginger, and several types of lillies. It
is a small garden home, but it is full of plants and they are all starting
to bloom. I wish I could share some of the wonderful colors in my yard with
those of you who are in the far north and have yet to see very many signs of
spring.
If anyone is planning to attend the Society of Louisiana Iris's show this
weekend (April 12, 13, & 14) in Lafayette, LA, I plan to be there on Sunday.
I would be glad to talk to anyone of you face-to-face. I will be the woman
who looks completely lost, but thrilled to be at the iris show. I suppose I
have said more than enough about myself. This ended up being longer that I
expected. Sorry about that. Remember, I am a beginner at all of this.
Thank you,
Janet Burleigh
