Note in catalogues that some have "unknown" as one parent.
True, it is not a _requirement_ . But, in reality, fewer and fewer varieties
are now being registered whose parentage is not known.
>>It is also my understanding that at this present time, registration is not
a prerequisite for entering a show, but an accurate name is. (Whatever that
means. Can any one clarify? -- for example an iris named by, say, Wilds,
may not be officially registered with AIS, but introduced and sold under
a name by which it becomes known.)
I think this is confusing because it involves two separate issues.
First, a variety must have been duly registered and introduced to be entered
into most sections of an AIS-sanctioned competition, but there are provisions
for sections of seedlings or species that are not registered. The club also has
the option of including a separate section of "Unnamed" or "UFO's" that are not
eligible for AIS ribbons. To find out how the show that you want to enter has
been set up, you have to consult the show schedule.
Second, the "accuracy" of the name is determined by comparing the flower with
its description in the official AIS Checklists. In practice, this just means
that if the name hasn't been registered, there's no way to rule it as being
"accurate". For example, let's say that I want to enter a seedling in a show.
I can't enter it as "Wet Kleenex", even if that's the name I expect to give it.
Or let's say that you want to enter "Aunt Sue's Dark Blue", which you've been
growing for 20 years. It won't be allowed in AIS-sanctioned competition because
that's not the way it was registered.
>Is there an AIS officer on this LIST that can contribute to this discussion?
If so, I hope they will jump in -- but I know that the current AIS Registrar,
Keith Keppel, is not online and I can speak from some experience because I
worked with the AIS Registrar for some years to legitimize varieties that had
been introduced but not registered.
