Nell, About 15 years ago several people, especially Louise Smith of
Williamsburg, VA and Katherine Wright led a campaign to restore fragrance
information to the application form for registering irises, and as a result
this information is now required. (For many years this information had not
been on the form). Louise directed several fragrance robins, and I was in
one of them for several years. Louise has accumulated VAST information on
the fragrance of different cultivars....and when I say VAST I mean VAST.

You might want to contact Louise who I am sure would provide you
advice...Louise Smith, 5013 Hickory Signpost Rd, Williamsburg, VA 23185. One
of the irises whose fragrance is strong and reminds me of spice drops is
VICTORIA FALLS. (Two of my introductions, SUKY and VIOLET MUSIC, are a
result of VIOLET MIRACLE x VICTORIA FALLS, and as inherited this fragrance,
but not quite as pronounced.

Another wonderfully fragrant iris is SOUTHLAND GRAPE (Burch 78)...it really
does have an intense fragrance of grapes juice.
Clarence Mahan in northern Virginia, where it did not snow last night dispite
all the warnings of the weathermen!
