Carolyn, There was quite a discussion of this subject, and my contribution
was quite minor. One point is important, however, which is that THERE ARE
MANY DIFFERENT TYPES OF IRISES and good companion plants for one type, e.g.
Japanese, can be quite inappropriate for another type, e.g. standard dwarf
bearded irises. I tend to think good companion plants are any plants that I
particularly like, e.g. hosta, daffodils, peonies, roses, foxgloves,
daylilies, lily of the valley, lilacs, etc. My most frequently used
companion plants are, however, weeds of various sorts. I find that nut sedge
is quite lovely when growing among the tall bearded irises. When you can't
beat 'em, join 'em. Forgive my poor attempt at humor! Warm wishes, Clarence
