Kathy asks about the pronunciation of pseudacorus
:
:How many say SUE-DOE-cor-us
:
:How many say sue-DOCK-cor-us
:
It's sue-DACK-or-us (more or less like your second choice. The origin
of the word is pseud(o) + Acorus, Acorus being a genus of grassy plants,
a few of which are grown in gardens. That plant is ACK-or-us, not
a-KOR-us, and the "o" from "pseudo" is dropped in the compound. It's
not up for a vote. Since the name means "false Acorus", not "false Corus",
SUE-doe-COR-us (your first choice, more or less) is just plain wrong.
BTW, this was one of Bee Warburton's pet peeves.
