If it were, it wouldn't be for long. ;)
It happens when
:the rhizmoe fails to produce an incresse and you haven't got any increases
:to replace the "mother" rhizime. It might happen more ofeten than we think
:if we have large clumps, we might not notice bloom out.
I agree with your observations. It's a really frustrating problem, but
it seems to happen at random. Many of them *can* be saved by pruning back
the bloomstalk (not all the way to the ground), or even cutting the rhizome
into several sections and replanting. Sometimes small increases will appear
by fall (and take another year before reaching bloom size), but sometimes
not. Ghio's SOAP OPERA came back to life for me this way.
What's *really* irritating is when seedlings do it on maiden bloom (and
of course only the most beautiful seedlings do!)
