Hello Robert Turley:
Thanks for your message on Louisiana Irises. I envy your bloom at this
time of year...and repeats at that!
I grow 75 or so Louisiana cultivars...and a species or two. I like them a
great deal, mostly because they do not suffer from rot, and they do not
flop about as do the tall bearded. Plus, the Louisianas are graceful...but
just big blobs of color.
I like the ones you mentioned...many of which I grow. HEATHER STREAM is a
beauty whereever it is grown, I think. Among my other favorites are
PRALINE FESTIVAL, BLACK GAMECOCK, RED ECHO, ANN CHOWNING, ROKKI ROCKWELL
(spelling?), JERI, ACADIAN MISS, SEA WISP, MARIE DOLORES, and PLANTATION
BEAU. Oh, yes, I forgot that I'm really fond of CHERRY CUP as well as
RHETT. BAYOU SHORT STUFF is a pleasant shorter one...with good purple
color (perhaps too tailored for many).
This winter has been very, very rough locally, with many late freezes...and
I am pleased to say the Louisianas came through just fine...but the TBs (at
least the ones that were planted last summer) have terrible rot!
The Society for Louisiana Iris annual meeting is this upcoming weekend in
Lafayette, LA. I'm leaving for that meeting on Thursday. It should be
fun...and the FOOD IS ALWAYS GOOD DOWN THERE!
