Caroyln & all:
the discussion on freezes and bloom reminds me of a cold spring when I was a
pretty new iris grower. The weather had been warm then cold for weeks and
weeks... but the irises had FINALLY managed to bloom just before the show!
THEN DISASTER! The weatherman predicted a freeze and I was frantic thinking
that my hard-won bloom would be destroyed by a frost... I decided the best
thing to do would be to cover the flowers for the night - but how do you
cover a blooming tall bearded iris. My solution was newspaper hats.... you
know the kind you folded in kindergarden. I quickly gathered all the
newspaper in the house and made 50 or so newspaper hats and then ran into the
night and covered each bloom. Sweet Leonard was working that night... and he
said when he woke up in the morning, he looked out the window and as the mist
lifted "it looked llke the Charge of the Light Brigade". We're still
laughing about "Iris Company" in the back yard.
Now, I let nature do what she will.
