Marternal Inheritance, footnote

All,

Linda thought to ask who funded Dr. Arnold's research on I. nelsonii, and
I though the group would appreciate the answer. His papers credit grants
from the National Science Foundation and the American Iris Society! I
believe some of the work was also supported by the Society for Louisiana
Irises through a grant to one his coauthors, Dr. Bennett at Arkansas
State U. The NSF funding comes from the fact that he is actually asking
a very basic scientific question, "Do species arise from hybridization?"
I. nelsonii is his model/example.

I should have also told to group that Dr. Arnold published a "popular"
and quite entertaining account of the research in the 1995 Special
Publication of the Society for Louisiana Iris. The publication may be
available from SLI Treasurer Elaine Bourque 1813 Broussard Rd. E.,
Lafayette, LA 70508
