I am also a Master Gardener in training (I graduate April 22, 1996).
That would really be great to be able to set up an informational table
at the local nurseries during the spring planting season. The county I
am in is rather small...there are 5 of us in training this year and 5
who are already certified in the past few years that our county has
offered the Master Gardening program. We need to donate 60 hours of
"work" in exchange for being trained. Trying to keep someone in the
office to man the phone lines seems to be the top priority during spring
and early summer...I am told that this is the season that most calls are
received. Our local extension Service unit has twice put a referendum
on the ballot to be voted for...to fund Co-operative Extension Service
and 4-H by placing a 1 cent to 3 cent tax levy on property
owners...this has twice been defeated. Funding will run out in June, I
am hoping that somehow the funding can be found somewhere to keep the
Extension office open in our county...maybe we will have to merge with
some of our surrounding counties; providing they would want us. My
daughters are both in 4-H ...I grew up with 4-H and I really hate to see
my children miss out on such a rewarding experience. But here I have
gone off on a tangent...sorry.
I would be interested to hear what Ginny and her Master Gardeners
program is involved in. I am new to this and I am really looking
forward to graduation...hopefully we will have a local Extension office
to be affiliated with!
