Re: Dividing Dutch Iris

I can't say I'm a "pro" at this. Usually I just buy new bulbs when the
Dutch irises start to look a little world-weary. (At less than 20 cents
a pop, how can you go wrong?) But here's a division method:

Dig them early in the fall, later than the bearded irises, say a month
or so before the first frost. Use a spading fork and dig deep so you
can find them all (good luck!). Separate any that are clustered together.
Save the larger ones. (If you're really serious about propagating them,
you can save the smaller ones too, and plant them in an out-of-the-way
place; they probably won't bloom for a few years.) Let them dry in a
cool, dry place for a few weeks, and them plant them as you would
new bulbs.
