Tom, I DO understand your position! And even though Mathew et al have grouped
all those tetraploids and Ii. croatica, florentina et al under this heading,
there still is the purple IB type iris that has travelled under the name I.
germanica for several hundred years.  And that is the I. germanica that most
people mean when they use the term.  (It is interesting isn't it, that
germanica played no role in the development of modern irises UNLESS one
decides to call a whole raft of irises "germanica" that have perfectly fine
