Re Florida iris

Hello all,

Just back from taking ROOTS (Journal of the Historic Iris Preservation
Society) to the printer. NOW we can have a LIFE again! If you have never
been on deadline for a publication that sounds like hyperbole -- but it is
unfortunately true! There must be at least a month of accumulated tasks and
pleasures stacked up awaiting their turn. Not the least, a couple of dozen
messages we wanted to reply to but didn't take the time. And of course,
three weeks of housekeeping, yard and garden chores.

One thing I have promised to cast on the net -- a plug for an iris that
grows much akin to kudzu in warm areas -- 'Crimson King' (Barr 1893). I
believe that way back, Robert Turley inquired about cultivars that might do
well in Florida. I know that the only thing that keeps 'Crimson King' from
crowding out 'Cordata' in southern California is frequent applications of
Roundup ; ) Well, it _is_ an almost-everbloomer in California and it has
escaped from cultivation much as the tawny daylily has in the southeast US.
It's one of the 'everywhere' iris in Southern Virginia along with pallida
and the dark clone of germanica.

More after catching up.
