This is correct...BUT the BEST orris root is made from the rhizome of I.
florentina, which in olden times was the only kind used. I have made orris
from both irises, and the orris made from pallida did not have the super
intense violet aroma that orris should have and does have when made from I.
florentina. You can have your iris and use it for orris too...leave a third
of the rhizome on with the fan and replant it...it will grow and increase.
Peal and slice the two thirds of the rhizome cut off. Put in air tight jar
for 2 or 3 years. Open and smell violets. Grind up in HEAVY DUTY grinder or
just use the slices...but do not eat it! It WILL MAKE YOU SICK. Various
cultures have used various types of irises for treating various
illnesses....but eating irises will definitely make you very ill! No mammal
I know likes or eats irises. Clarence Mahan in VA
