Is it rot, or not?

I've been wondering why some of my TB's haven't bloomed or even shown any
signs of budding yet. Only one of the eight that I planted last fall has a
bloom stalk. I got down to eye level with those rhizomes this morning and
discovered that 3 of the original rhizomes that I planted last fall are
totally disintegrated inside their outer shells. All the rest of my latest
additions seem to be fine.

The disintegrated ones also seem to be the ones that I planted level with
the top of the soil. The ones I planted deeper didn't seem to suffer at all
from this malady. I didn't mulch at all around the rhizomes last fall for
fear of rot. Also they never appeared gooey or mushy, as several members of
the IRIS-L have described rot. Can anyone explain this. Is this just pure
and simple rot that went unnoticed so long that it eventually dried out?

Each one of these damaged ones has at least two new healthy, tall growths
that are still growing. Should I pull them up immediately and clean off the
dead part of the old rhizome or should I wait until I divide all of my
others this fall to perform the cleanup?
