The printed labels from Garden Fonts have outlasted everything else that I've
tried. I got my first set several years ago, and used them alongside what had
been by previous "best" label: dymo embossed plastic strips. After two years,
the embossed labels needed to be replaced. After four years, the Garden Fonts
labels are still easy to read.
Bear in mind that this climate really tests things. Some so-called permanent
markers don't even make it through bloom season. Penciled tags make it through
bloom season, but are unreadable by fall. Embossed tape lasts a couple of years
if the tag is placed facing north to protect it from the sun, but only a few
months if exposed to the sun. We've also tried stamped tags like Mark
described, but weren't able to find paint or ink that would last through bloom
season.
