I think I did write something for the Bulletin about that several years ago --
but it's easier to recap than look it up.
I replant all "mother rhizomes" of things in scarce supply. They usually go in
completely separate beds, but sometimes they get tucked into a vacant row of a
regular bed. This works best with sandy soil. This technique doesn't produce a
"whole bunch" of small rhizomes, but there are certainly enough to justify the
time, space, and effort it takes. I do get some bloom on these the first
spring, but that's not my goal. I want healthy, bloom-size rhizomes the
following year.
