Carolyn: You are quite right about iris rhizomes growing up to ground level.
When I lived in New Jersey the soil was very sandy and so I planted my iris
about 1 inch down under ground level. By the next bloom season the iris were
growing right up on top of the ground. Even those planted deeper than that
would send up a pencil like growth from which the new rhizome would grow to
reach ground level. I guess the point I'm trying to make is that unless the
rhizome is planted really deep the plant will seek its proper ground growing
level within 2 growing seasons at the most. I have inadvertently tilled iris
under and have had them surface from about 6 inches down.
