re: plant sales

Debbie asked <1. Are most of the unnamed or inexpensive things at these
sales
iris that the members are "dumping" (a word that was used more than once) on
the innocent beginner? If so this seems more likely to alienate than
attract new members!

2. For varieties that are sold properly labelled, how do the prices at such
sales tend to compare with buying the same varieties elsewhere? Are they
usually cheaper, about the same, or more expensive?>

'Dumping' is probably not a good word for it - what's one grower's garbage is
another's treasure. I 'dump' about 100 seedling siberian iris that volunteer
all over my yard at our sales. I advertise them for exactly what they are -
we call them 'Linda's garbage' and sell them for about 50 cents or a dollar
for a 'wad' of them. People come back the following year for more. We also
'dump' older varieties that we don't like for one reason or another - color,
height, replaced by one we like better. And we 'dump' ones that multiply so
rapidly we have lots of extras. I dump early bloomers that don't ever bloom
for me - on a ridgetop they would bloom nearly every year. We also dump
unnamed iris, preferably at least labelled as to color - I know there are
some people out there who throw away iris if they don't know the name, but
some of my favorites are older unknowns.

Prices are generally lower than the big time sources, but also mostly of
older iris - ones we have had long enough to have extras for sale and trade
among ourselves. We sell most rhizomes for 2 or 3$, newer ones for as much
as $5. I think we may have had a very few sell for more than that.

I suspect every sale in the country is different - anybody out there sell in
pots?
