I have been hearing repeated how impossible it is to grow Bearded Iris in
the Gulf South. I disagree. This may be true for some cultivars but I have
never systematicly grown the newer named cultivars so cannot refute this
completely.
As a child, my mother and I grew rizome iris obtained from my grandmothers'
gardens in Houston Texas. One grandmother lived in northern Arkansas (USDA
zone 6b) and one was local (native) to Houston. As I got older, I bought
iris (both Dutch and TB) from the local stores. I still have a wonderful TB
(so dark a crimson that it seems black) that I have to defend from plant
poachers here in Arkansas (USDA zone 7b). Houston certainly qualifies as HOT
and HUMID and WET.
