A friendly reminder to all from a rock garden editor: obtain permission from
people before you quote them and when given permission, be sure to credit
Iris-L as well. Electronic postings, casual though they may be, do fall
under copyright laws and the author deserves the courtesy in any case and
Iris-L deserves credit as a "publisher". Many of the people who contribute
want to be assured that the integrity of their work will be preserved if it
is presented in a different format or context and in some cases want to
reserve the right to update their views.
If you decide to turn a thread into an article, it is best to seek
permission from the individuals as you write the article. It is burdensome
for an editor to have to check that proper permissions have been sought.
General practice includes sending the contributors a copy of the article,
especially if it is a region or club bulletin that they might not otherwise
see. All this may seem like a lot of extra work, but form letters can be
developed and it is vital to keep the goodwill of all contributors.
