One of many possible explanations:
Herbicide drift and contamination will cause a temporary change in color of
Iris especially the bearded. All Iris are sensitive to either airborne or
pre-emergent herbicides. If you used a sprinkle and weed product such as
*Preen*, the dose is difficult to control. An AIS Bulletin a couple of
years back had an article on proper use of herbicides. I will try to
reference it for you if you think that this could have been a problem. If
the damage is not too severe, the Iris will recover and bloom their normal
colors.
