Hint...Many people will wait until late winter, very early spring to clean
their iris beds of old foliage and debris. That way, I am told, you get most
of the borer eggs in the debris...a person at the Univ of Md did a study a
few years back and addressed our local society...he says by cutting leaves
and getting rid of old foliage in the fall you may be causing yourself more
of a problem because, according to him, if the borer moth is present she will
not lay her eggs on anything except irises...thus instead of putting the eggs
on foliage will lay the eggs on the rhizome or deep in the fan...which means
they get a head start in the spring.  This made some sense to me, but I would
still like to see more controlled studies on this subject.  Clarence Mahan in
