Clarence: I find most of "my" borer in those leaf fans. I want to try to
get them before they get to the rhizome. That's before the bloomstalk is
fully matured, so, here, in May. When I am digging to divide for the sale
and auction, which is July 23 or so, the borer is then big and fat and in
the rhizome. On the day before the show (they read my calender) I can find
them in the blooms, that's June 7 or so. So, In April, that's now, I should be
spraying.... I sprayed last year in earnest for the first time. Was real
strict about the timing. Got 'em anyway, but a reduced amount, maybe. I want
to think so anyway. When they are in the leaves of the fan, they are chewing
on the edge of the new leaf while making a home in the old one. You can feel
them if you run your fingers up the leaf. And you just press the fingers
together, squish.
I agree with you about borer on the MTB and dwarf. These are relatively
borer-free but not completely. I find some when I'm dividing for the sale.
I hardly ever have borer during bloom time, maybe because they haven't
matured -- too short a time to get to the bloom since the bloom comes in
days rather than weeks after the first period of rapid growth. If I examine
mine tomorrow, I'll bet I'll find dwarfs with bloomstalks forming. This is
much too early ( IHOPE) for the borer to get to his dirtiest work.
